Eco-Friendly Sex: Going Green in the Bedroom

When adjusting your lifestyle to be more eco-friendly what you do in the bedroom isn’t something that’s immediately on your mind. In fact, sex is one of those things that no one really thinks about or knows exactly how to switch to something more eco-friendly while still being safe. There are options out there. Sex is a natural part of life so we shouldn’t feel so awkward talking about it.

It may be awkward to talk about, but what you do in the bedroom can impact the planet.

Many sex products are made from plastics, especially if it’s latex free, and most of them are disposable products. How you change your habits in the bedroom could not only positively impact the planet but your health too. Let’s take a look at some products available that won’t hinder what goes on in the bedroom while reducing your impact on the planet.

1. Lambskin Condoms

Lambskin condoms are not vegan-friendly but they also are not made from sheepskin. They are actually made from sheep intestines, which may sound gross, but this means that they are 100% biodegradable. These condoms can be used with oil-based lubricants and are said to feel as though you aren’t even wearing a condom. There are a couple of downsides, unfortunately. Lambskins are a bit porous but not so much so that sperm can get through but it does not protect against STDs. They can also be a bit pricey but are still a great option for many.

2. Sustain Natural Condoms

Sustain’s condoms are vegan however they are not latex free. The reason that I recommend this brand is because they are fair trade, nitrosamine and paraben free, low odor, and they donate 10% of their profits to women’s health initiatives. While any disposable condom, regardless of what they are made of, might end up in a landfill buying plastic free condoms increases support in natural and sustainable condom productions.

3. Reusable Condoms

There’s not a huge selection available but for those who are adventurous, there are these. They are made of silicon but since they are reusable there won’t be a ton of waste produced compared to regular condoms. There was a promising reusable condom design in 2015 by Origami Condoms but due to an embezzlement case, the condoms were never released.

4. Medical Grade Silicone Vibrators

Plastic can be packed full of a lot of nasty chemicals that negatively affect our bodies. Look for silicone-based products that are medical grade. These products will be free of many of these toxins but be careful because some companies claim to use medical grade silicone when their products are actually mixed with other ingredients. If it has a weird smell to it it is not 100% medical grade silicone. There are a couple of great options for vibrators that are made from medical grade silicone and practices sustainable business practices. We-Vibe is one of those companies that does use medical grade silicone and has awesome business practices including designing their products and packaging to leave a minimal environmental footprint and they also buy carbon-offset credits. They have some cool products including vibrators that can be used on your own or one meant for couples.

5. Glass Dildos

If you want to go the silicone route with dildos again look for medical grade or better yet, ditch plastic completely and go with glass! Glass dildos are pretty unique can be warmed for placed in the refrigerator. They are great for those who are sensitive to plastics and they don’t contain some the nasty chemicals found in plastics. The downside though is that glass dildos are not flexible.

6. Organic Lube

A lot of lubes contain petroleum, fragrances, and other ingredients that are not safe for us to ingest let alone putting it on our sensitive bits.  Sustain also has some organic lube that does not contain silicone, propyline, parabens, petroleum, glycerin, or carcinogens. Look for lubes that are petroleum free and if you can’t put it in your mouth why would you want it down there?

7. Organic Lingerie

A lot more companies are now starting to offer organic clothing including lingerie. It may be hard to find but it is out there. The nice thing about any kind of organic clothing is that it is made from natural fibers such as cotton, wool, or bamboo and won’t have any synthetic fibers (for the most part).

8. Natural Cleaners

At the end of the night, it is important to clean yourself and your toys to prevent the spread of diseases and decrease your risk of infections. You don’t really need to get special cleaners to make sure everything is sanitized. Castile soap and water or some vinegar can easily do the job.

Enjoy your time with your significant other knowing that you reduce your environmental impact. Love is in the air.
